3 Day Uganda Gorilla Trekking

This 3-day gorilla trekking itinerary in Uganda is designed for travelers who want a focused, high-impact experience that maximizes comfort, reduces travel fatigue, and delivers optimal time with mountain gorillas. The program assumes arrival into Entebbe International Airport the day before the itinerary starts (or an early-morning arrival on Day 1) and includes private transfers, a charter flight option, five-star lodge accommodation near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, experienced guides and trackers, porter service, and post-trek relaxation services (spa, warm showers, gourmet meals). Timings are indicative and can be adjusted to flight schedules, permit availability, and personal preference.
Day 0: Arrival (Optional pre-night in Entebbe)
Evening arrival at Entebbe International Airport. Private airport meet-and-greet with a representative who will confirm your permits, lodge booking, charter flight (if applicable), and contact details.
Transfer (30–45 minutes) to a high-end hotel in Entebbe for an overnight stay. Choice hotels offer garden-view rooms, polished service, and the chance to rest before travel to gorilla country. Dinner at the hotel restaurant; brief itinerary review with your private guide or operator representative.
If you arrive early in the day, you can add a short activity such as a boat trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary (day visits require prior arrangement) or a guided Entebbe botanic gardens walk.
Day 1: Transfer to Bwindi (Charter flight option) and Lodge Check-in
Early breakfast at your Entebbe hotel. Your private driver will collect you and transfer you to Entebbe Airport for a scheduled charter flight to Kisoro or Bwindi airstrip (flight time approx. 1–1.5 hours). Charter flights must be booked in advance; they are the most efficient way to reach gorilla country and offer dramatic aerial views of the Rift Valley, Lake Edward, and the Virunga volcanoes.
If traveling by road, depart early (approx. 8–10 hours drive from Entebbe) with private air-conditioned vehicle and a professional driver-guide. Luxury itineraries often include stops for comfort, a scenic lunch, and restroom breaks.
Arrival at Kisoro / Bwindi airstrip. You will be met by your lodge representative and transferred (30–90 minutes depending on lodge placement) through verdant countryside to your exclusive lodge. Expect tea or coffee on arrival and a personal welcome briefing. Luggage will be handled by staff.
Afternoon at leisure to relax and acclimatize. Options include a short guided nature walk around the lodge grounds, birdwatching (Bwindi hosts over 350 bird species), or a visit to a nearby community project. Lodges typically offer spa services – pre-book a massage to soothe any travel stiffness.
The lodge’s head guide or your private guide will run through final logistics including check of your permit details (trekking day assignment), fitness expectations, safety and etiquette rules for gorilla visits, and packing suggestions for the next day. Porter service will be organized for those who wish to hire a porter (strong porters help carry packs and assist on steep sections).
Gourmet multi-course meal with locally sourced ingredients and optional wine pairings. Many lodges provide a “Gorilla night” menu or a celebratory meal the evening before the trek.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day (Main Experience)
Early wake-up depending on your assigned trek time. A light breakfast will be provided; check that you have your permit, passport copy, face mask (recommended to protect gorillas), camera, snacks, water, walking stick, rain gear, and any medication.
Short drive to the designated trailhead and park briefing point. Here you will meet the ranger team and trackers who locate the gorilla family that day. The briefing covers safety, rules (no eating near gorillas, no flash photography), and assigns your guide and porter.
Groups are limited to eight visitors per family and are assigned one hour with the gorillas once located. The duration of the trek varies, anywhere from a 30-minute walk to a strenuous full-day hike (4–6+ hours) depending on the family’s location and the terrain. Your lodge’s porter and guide will support you throughout. Expect steep slopes, muddy trails, and possibly dense bamboo or undergrowth.
When you find the gorilla family, you’ll be given one hour to observe and photograph them under strict rules. Guides will help position the group to minimize stress on the animals and maximize viewing. This hour is usually the emotional high point of the trip; watch for silverbacks, playful juveniles, and tender mother-infant interactions. Maintain the recommended distance, be calm, and enjoy the intimacy of the moment.
After exiting the forest, the lodge’s staff will be waiting to assist with hot towels, a restorative drink, and a transfer back to the lodge where a hot shower or bath awaits (most luxury properties ensure facilities are ready for returnees).
A well-earned gourmet lunch with local specialties and international dishes. Expect a relaxed, celebratory atmosphere; guests often share photos and impressions. Options include a therapeutic spa treatment (deep tissue massage, hot stone therapy), a nap, or a reflective forest walk with your guide to discuss gorilla behavior and local conservation efforts. Lodges often arrange a private storytelling session with a tracker or community leader to enrich the experience.
Dinner followed by a debrief with your guide. Many lodges will present conservation briefings or show footage from their monitoring projects. Sleep early after a long, fulfilling day.
Day 3: Return to Entebbe or Departure
After breakfast, and final check-out, your lodge will transfer you to the Kisoro / Bwindi airstrip for your charter flight back to Entebbe (1–1.5 hours) or to Kigali if your onward flight requires it. If traveling by road, begin your private transfer back to Entebbe with comfort stops and a scenic lunch en route. Depending on flight schedules, you may connect with an international departure that evening or overnight in Entebbe at a luxury hotel. If your international flight departs the following day, consider a relaxed evening by the lake with a final gourmet dinner and a short debrief with your guide. This marks the end of your safari.
