July 20, 2024Visit GARAMA CAVES The dynamic Garama caves are 342 meters long and 14 meters deep which brings about darkness all the time in the caves and going deeper in the caves one needs to have a flashlight to enable vision. The caves were inhabited by the Batwa people 500,000 years prior until recently when they were resettled and the caves were gazetted as a tourist attraction area by the Uganda government through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. These stiff caves improve the experience of tourists who visit Mgahinga National Park. A perfunctory history of Garama caves. These unworried caves were traditionally Batwa homesteads and they were a community where these pygmy people settled for decades. The caves are nestled in the former farmland of Batwa. The Batwa are famous for their hunting and food-gathering skills in these natural areas especially impenetrable forests. Cultural ceremonies were also conducted in these cordial caves and this made them a sacred ground that was not to be tampered with by other neighboring societies. So, the caves were also hiding grounds in times of conflict with neighboring communities, especially the Bantu people who from time to time carried out raids on the plantations and catches of Batwa. Formation of Garama caves. The well-built Garama caves were formed after repeated processes of dissolution of limestone. Rainwater through the volcanoes in Mgahinga picked up carbon dioxide from the air as it percolated through the weathered rocks. This subsequently turned into a weak acid and it slowly dissolved out of the limestone along the joints in the weak rocks, bedding planes and fractures. It is some of these that became enlarged to form the present-day Garama caves. Other natural processes of weathering and growth of vegetation and a mixture of some human activities gave the caves their present-day look. Location of Garama caves. These stable caves are nestled in the Southwest of Uganda in the high-powered Mgahinga National Park. They are underneath a plateau as you approach the northern edge of the National Park. They are just three kilometres from the Ntebeko Park entrance. This is due to the paintings on the walls of the caves that communicate things that the Batwa can read and interpret for visitors. The caves also have an exhilarating history that keeps them outstanding and a lot of stories told by the indigenous people offer visitors a glimpse into what the early lives of Africans were. Batwa euphoric music dance and drama also set the caves apart, this is because of the various songs that the women sing that remind them of the days they were sent out of the caves, stories and other folklore that also gives visitors unusual experiences. The length and width of the cave further make it unique and is one of the longest and largest in Africa. ATTRACTIONS IN GARAMA CAVES The long caves are an outstanding attraction for tourists all over the globe, especially the photographers, and archaeologists who travel to this place to find more about the history of human beings. Batwa holy spots The caves have sacred grounds within them where the indigenous people used to carry out religious traditional ceremonies and sacrifices and these are a great attraction since the local people tell stories in line with what was done back then as they commemorate the deeds of their forefathers. The highest point of the park It is in Garama caves that you get to reach the highest point of Mgahinga National Park which offers breathtaking views of the nearby surroundings of the hills and valleys in patterns as they connect to the skies through clouds which is worth a visitor’s time. ACTIVITIES DONE IN GARAMA CAVES Cultural encounters. Visitors get to engage and interact with the indigenous Batwa cultural groups who tell them more about their ways of life and teach them on how they used to hunt and gather fruits in the wilderness and such experiences are worthwhile. Hiking and nature walks. These are possible because of the highland areas around the caves and the various vegetation that provides ambient grounds for compelling nature walks that visitors tend to find worth the effort. Gorilla tracking. Being situated in Mgahinga National Park, a lot of visitors tend to combine their trips to Garama with a little bit of gorilla tracking to enhance the experience. Accessibility of Garama caves. Garama caves are just 14 kilometers South of Kisoro town and they can be accessed by road up to the Ntebeko entrance of Mgahinga National Park, the outstanding caves are just about 3 kilometers into the park. July 11, 2024Visit KIGALI CITY The idyllic Kigali city is Rwanda’s central business command and plausibly the largest city in Rwanda. It is conceivably the cleanest mystical city in East Africa and it has been Rwanda ‘s focal point for economic, transport and cultural developments since she got her independence and Kigali became the capital city. A brief history of Kigali city.    The tranquil city was a booming trade centre period before 1895, after and during the German rule. The mystical Kigali city was originally founded by Richard Kandt, one of the German rulers in that region back then in 1907. The nostalgic city subsequently became a regional centre during the Belgian colonial rule era that ran from 1919 to 1962 when Rwanda got her independence from the Belgians.   The opulent Kigali city became the capital of Rwanda upon independence in 1962 and has since then boasted of business growth, socially and culturally. The city prides itself in cleanliness and security that well align with its motto – “cleanliness and security”. All citizens perform their duties in respect to this motto and that’s why the city stands out from the rest in East Africa as the cleanest. It is important to remember that Rwanda as a country went through massive killings between the indigenous tribes that inhabited the land that is to say the Hutu and Tutsi. They did not like each other before and we have been fighting ever since the Belgians left for who was to rule the other. Several killings and chaos ruled over the country in the periods before 1994 and this claimed thousands of lives of the countrymen. Several museums have been set up as a means to commemorate the lives of the lost people and also a sign for future generations not to involve themselves in such clashes. The museums include; the Belgian Peacekeepers Memorial, and the Kigali genocide museum, several art pieces in these museums hope visitors have a glimpse into what the genocide era was like and what it cost the country. Art centers. Rwanda as a country is celebrated for its diverse cultures and art. Various artists parade their works in different art galleries in the country that are visited by tourists, especially in the whimsical city Centre of Kigali. In Uganda, the charges vary depending on the visitor category. The foreign non-residents are charged USD 700 to have their gorilla permits booked, USD 600 for foreign residents and Ugandans (East Africa citizens) pay shs. 250,000 per person. To have a gorilla permit secured/booked, you need USD 1500 for Rwanda and this is most ideal for luxury/high-end travelers interested in visiting the endangered mountain gorillas. Which are the best Gorilla safari destinations? When booking a gorilla permit, it is also a good thing to have a destination of your desire in mind. The key places to consider a must-visit on gorilla tour include Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park –these are gorilla trekking destinations for tourists on a tour in Uganda. In Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is where you can locate habituated mountain gorilla families and crossing the D.R. Congo, you can explore Virunga National Park. When is the best time to book your gorilla permit? It is a good thing to also understand when best to book your gorilla permits to avoid having issues on actual date of gorilla trekking. Considering our experience, we always recommend our clients to have their permits booked early enough at least 2-4 months. This can save you from last minute stress, especially if you plan to travel during the dry season also considered to be the peak season. The peak months of the year fall around June, July, August to September, and December, January to February. How can I book a gorilla Permit? Gorilla permits are among the relevant documents visitors must have to be allowed to track gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Not any gorilla permit should be presented on actual gorilla trekking adventure but a valid one. Booking gorilla permits is part of making the entire gorilla trip complete and should be done early enough before the actual visit to see mountain gorillas or eastern lowland gorillas. To have your gorilla permit booked, there is a process one should undergo through and is generally tedious. Considering your tight schedule back home, you may wonder how easier you can have your permit booked in advance to avoid last minute stress. The easiest way to secure your gorilla permit in Uganda or Rwanda is by dealing with a recognized tour operator/company on the ground. This is where our reservation team comes in. As part of your gorilla safari requirement, our team being on ground will ensure that your permit is booked early enough and everything else that is needed for gorilla trekking is put together. The beauty about dealing with local safari company such as ours is that we have knowledge on the different gorilla groups and surrounding communities plus various accommodation facilities for your night stay. This is in addition to making the entire gorilla permit booking process easier on behalf of our clients. There is also an option of booking the permit directly through the reservation team of respective park authorities. But the challenge is that you must undergo through the long process to have your permit booked and this may not favor you depending on your schedule. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is an organ in charge not only for conservation of wildlife in the Pearl of Africa but also sets prices for tourism activities in the parks including gorilla permits. In Rwanda, you can contact Rwanda Tourism Board/Rwanda Development Board to have your permit booked. What is the East African tourist visa? After the briefing, you then head over to the trailhead, the starting point of the hike that leads you to the chimpanzees. The hike can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the location of the chimps, the hike is about 4.2km at an altitude of 240m. The hurdles you may face are the steep terrain that might be muddy and slippery during the wet season and disturbing insects therefore you need to have insect repellent and good hiking boots and waterproof clothing and raincoats just in case it rains. Don’t forget to carry water and snacks and above all you must be physically able and fit to trek. When you eventually meet the chimpanzees, you are allowed to spend an hour with primates and observing just how similar they are to man such as how they communicate, feed, play and groom with each other. During the early years of 20th century, white rhinos roamed freely in Murchison and Kidepo National Parks because poaching was strictly prohibited during the colonial era however, during the 70s and 80s, there was insecurity in the country and therefore poachers found a gap to hunt down the already endangered white rhinos hence leaving none in Uganda.Hopes of having the rhinos back in Uganda were revived in 2005 when Rhino Fund Uganda worked together with the Uganda Wildlife Authority to reintroduce one of the big five animals in Uganda’s wilderness. However before taking that big step a sanctuary needed to be setup in order to protect the few animals introduced.Ziwa rhino sanctuary started with only 6 rhinos, 4 were got from Kenya while the other 2 were donated from Disneyland in the Unites states of America. The sanctuary is 70 kilometers squared wide and surrounded by electric fences that are 2 meters high. The sanctuary now has 22 white rhinos and this has been successful due to the conservation efforts by the rhino fund, donors, researchers and UWA. Read more…The Batwa PeopleApril 9, 2024Visit THE BATWA PEOPLE The Batwa or Twa are the indigenous African pygmies living in the Great lakes region of East Africa and originally lived in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga rainforests before they were turned into national parks, they refer to themselves as the keepers of the forests. Just like other pygmies, their average height is 1.5 meters. They are believed to have lived in forest for more than 60,000 years and that is one of the reasons as to why they are so attached to the forests and have a deep understanding of how to use the plants and animals in their daily lives. The Batwa pygmies having a saying that says “A Mtwa loves the forest as he loves his body” that shows how much they love and aim to protect the forest. Though they were accused of poaching and posed a threat to the mountain gorillas, it was never in their intentions to hurt the gorillas rather than sharing the forest with them. When they were fully evicted from the forests by the Ugandan government in 1992, they couldn’t fully adapt to way of living outside the forest. They started living in the settlement camps around the forest in Kabale, Kisoro and Kanungu districts. Their skills and tools were of no use in this new environment and therefore resorted to hideous activities such as stealing, smoking and over drinking. They faced a lot of poverty since the forest always provided everything for them and now they had to work in order to get what to eat and medication, they didn’t know how to practice farming like the neighboring Bantu communities. While in the forest they always gathered fruits and plants, hunted smaller animals for meat which wasn’t the case in the new settlement area.Despite the challenges faced trying to adapt to the new way of living, the Batwa have strongly lived together in harmony, they share everything with their families and help each other in caring for the children, farming and cooking. They have also kept their traditions and celebrate festivals together. They have also been able to preserve their traditions like the caves within the forest that act as their places of worship. The Batwa are creative people and it’s been displayed in the different handmade art crafts such as pottery, basket weaving and through the music and dance performances.Different organizations have been able to support the pygmies by making it easy for the Batwa to live and thrive outside the forests, the Kellerman family started projects to improve on the sanitation and hygiene of the communities, and they also built clinics and schools for improved living conditions. Another organization is the United Organization for Batwa Development founded in 2002 and it is dedicated to improve on the income generation of Batwa households, benefit sharing from the profits got through tourism and also educating the people, this has increased on the literacy levels.
